Some Davis businesses and institutions are closing early, canceling events or otherwise adjusting operations as the community remains on high alert following three stabbings in the past week.
Many are citing safety concerns, after attacks killed two men Thursday at Central Park and Saturday at Sycamore Park, and wounded a woman Monday at a homeless encampment near Second and L streets. No suspect is in custody.
Here are some of the changes at stores, restaurants and on the UC Davis campus.
Stores close early, farmers market canceled
▪ Woodstock’s Pizza in Davis, at 238 G St., said it will close at 9 p.m. until further notice, and will not take delivery orders after 8 p.m., for the safety of its staff. The G Street restaurant is normally open through midnight Sunday through Thursday, and until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
▪ The Davis Food Co-op, at 620 G St., is closing at 8 p.m. until further notice. A block party planned at the Food Co-op this Saturday has been canceled.
▪ The Davis Farmers Market at Central Park, which normally runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, was canceled this week “out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our sellers, staff and customers.” The farmers market plans to open as scheduled on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
UC Davis cancels campus events, moves evening classes online
UC Davis leaders on Tuesday announced all classes ending later than 6 p.m. will be held remotely until further notice.
The university on Wednesday canceled its Transfer Aggie Day, which had been planned for this coming Friday. The annual event is a daylong informational program for transfer students and their families. Campus officials in the announcement said students “will have virtual opportunities to celebrate their admission to UC Davis” this month.
UC Davis also postponed its 21st annual César Chávez Youth Leadership Conference and Celebration, which had been scheduled for Saturday. It will be held this fall; a new date has not yet been announced.
The 24-hour study room at the university’s Shields Library will be open with reduced hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Other campus facilities and recreation activities “will close by 8 p.m. and not re-open until at least 7 a.m.” The campus recreational pool, which normally opens at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays, will not open until 9 a.m.
UC Davis officials said the reduced hours at campus facilities will remain in place through next Monday unless otherwise noted.
