A Woodland woman was arrested on suspicion of arson Wednesday night in connection with at least four grass fires that broke out in northeast Woodland amid red flag warning conditions, authorities said.

The woman, 41, was booked into the Yolo County Jail late Wednesday on four counts of arson, according to police logs.

The fires ignited while much of the Sacramento Valley was under red flag conditions from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Thursday. Due to the high winds, high temperatures and low humidity, the National Weather Service said fires could spread rapidly in the area.

In the early afternoon Wednesday, the Woodland Fire Department responded to the first of the fires, which broke out on the 200 block of North Pioneer Street near Highway 113.

Firefighters contained all four fires reported in the area, and no structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

However, investigators determined that the fires were suspicious, according to a Thursday news release from the Woodland Police Department.

The 41-year-old woman was located by police Wednesday night near a column of smoke at the intersection of Churchill Downs Avenue and Santa Anita Drive on Woodland’s north side, the release said.

Officers approached the woman, who police said matched the suspect description, while she was walking away from the fire, the release said. The woman briefly tried to evade authorities on foot before being arrested, according to the release.
