Goodbye ski lift, hello beach. Tahoe opens first summer recreation areas this weekend
It may be the end of April, but why not hit the beach?
Lake Tahoe is getting ready to open its summer recreational areas around the basin, starting Saturday with the opening of Baldwin and Nevada beaches, both on the south side.
The U.S. Forest Service’s Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has announced tentative opening dates for the lake’s other day-use ares and campgrounds, most of them in May or on June 1.
Here is a partial list of notable facilities that will officially open in the next few weeks, provided by Active Norcal. The dates are subject to change due to weather, as a late-spring freeze-over is not impossible.
May 10: Sandpit Off-Highway vehicle area, Meeks Bay Resort; William Kent, Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Bayview, Fallen Leaf, and Nevada Beach campgrounds
May 11: Round Hill Pines Resort
May 15: Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor, Eagle Falls restrooms, Kiva Picnic Area, McKinney Rubicon Trailhead restrooms, Sawmill Pond, Tallac Point
May 24: Camp Richardson RV Park, Eagles Nest and Badgers Den campgrounds
May 25: Luther Pass Campground, Angora Resort, Big Meadow Trailhead,Pope Beach
June 1: Blackwood Canyon and Watson Lake campgrounds
As Active Norcal noted in an accompanying news release, these recreation areas are open year-round, but there are no restrooms, parking or trash removal available until the official opening dates.
The full list of Tahoe recreation areas, as well as roads and gates that are open seasonally, is available at the U.S. Forest Service website.
Some of the recreation areas will remain officially open through mid-October, while others won’t close until the middle or end of November.
