Rapper Saweetie, Elk Grove high school grad, receives her first Grammy nominations
Twenty-eight-year-old rapper Saweetie landed her first Grammy nomination for the 64th Grammy Awards on Tuesday.
The Recording Academy announced the nominations for 86 categories. Also nominated was Sacramento’s alternative metal band Deftones.
Saweetie, known for her debut single “Icy Girl,” earned a nod for Best Rap Song for her track “Best Friend” featuring Doja Cat. She was also nominated for Best New Artist, along with Baby Keem, Olivia Rodrigo and Japanese Breakfast.
“I’m speechless I wish I had the words to express how I feel but I’m just so grateful!!!,” Saweetie tweeted to her followers after hearing the news. “Being acknowledged for all the hard work me & my team have been doing feels AMAZINNNNNG.”
The artist, whose real name is Diamonté Harper, is a northern California native, hailing from Santa Clara. She moved to Sacramento in 2007 and graduated from Monterey Trail High School in Elk Grove.
Saweetie, who started writing music at the age of 14, has since released a handful of singles and EPs. She told Complex that her debut album is “on the way.”
You can catch the 2022 Grammy Awards show from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 31. The Recording Academy will announce winners from the Crypto.com Area, formerly known as the Staples Center, in Los Angeles.
The show will be broadcast on CBS. You can also stream it live and on-demand on Paramount+.
