The singer and songwriter, who introduced R&B groups Tony! Toni! Toné! and Lucy Pearl, will perform in the capital at Channel 24, 1800 24th St. near R Street, one of Sacramento’s newest music venues in midtown, on Sept. 7.
Pre-sale tickets began Thursday. General ticket sales open to the public at 10 a.m. Friday.
What is Channel 24?
Channel 24 is an entertainment and music venue operated by Berkeley-based independent concert promoter Another Planet Entertainment.
The venue, which can hold up to 2,150 concertgoers, includes a general admission floor, a tiered balcony with select reserved seats, multiple bars and an upstairs open-air patio.
The concert hall debuted in April with performances by Tucker Wetmore, Tycho and Sierra Ferrell.
“Artists are always asking for a show in Sacramento,” said Liz Liles-Brown, Another Planet Entertainment’s marketing director, in a February interview with The Bee. “Now we can book them in Sacramento at our venue. We feel like we’re going to bring extremely world-class, solid acts year-round to Sacramento.”
Who is Raphael Saadiq?
Oakland-born Saadiq began his music career in 1984, touring as a backup singer with Sheila E. and Prince at age 18.
He co-founded Tony! Toni! Toné! with his brother D’Wayne Wiggins and cousin Timothy Christian Riley. They recorded their 1988 debut album, “Who?,” in Sacramento with producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, known for their work with Timex Social Club and Club Nouveau.
Tony! Toni! Toné! released “The Revival” (1990), “Sons of Soul” (1993) and “House of Music” (1996), producing hits such as “Anniversary,” “(Lay Your Head On My) Pillow,” “It Never Rains (In Southern California)” and “Let’s Get Down” with DJ Quik.
After the group disbanded in 1997, Saadiq formed Lucy Pearl in 2000 with En Vogue’s Dawn Robinson and DJ Ali of A Tribe Called Quest. Their self-titled album featured “Dance Tonight” and “You,” with Snoop Dogg and Q-Tip.
Saadiq’s career spans five decades. He has been nominated 22 times for Grammy Awards and won two for his work on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album and her song “Cuff It.”
