Peanut Butter Recall Update for 40 States as FDA Sets Risk Level
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified an almost nationwide peanut butter recall as Class II, affecting products shipped to 40 states, according to agency records.
The recall covers multiple peanut butter products produced by Ventura Foods LLC of Los Angeles, California, after the company discovered foreign material-specifically pieces of blue plastic-in a filter during production.
Newsweek approached Ventura Foods LLC for comment via a contact form on its website early Friday morning.
What To Know
The recall was voluntarily initiated by the firm and remains ongoing, the FDA said.
The recalled products include several single‑serve peanut butter items and peanut butter-and-jelly combinations distributed under multiple brands and pack formats.
Some of the affected products were distributed by Dyma Brands, Inc., US Foods, Sysco Corporation, Gordon Food Service, and Independent Marketing Alliance, among others, according to FDA listings.
The recall was initiated on April 30, 2025, and the FDA assigned the Class II classification on February 12, 2026. The agency has not listed a termination date.
Across the affected products, distribution totals include 379 cases, 929 cases, and more than 22,000 combined cases across various package sizes, based on FDA recall entries.
All of the recalled products fall under the FDA's Event ID 96817 and were distributed through letters sent to consignees or the public.
What the Class II Recall Means
A Class II recall is used by the FDA when a product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or when the probability of serious adverse health consequences is considered remote.
The classification reflects the agency's assessment of risk based on the information available at the time of review.
In this case, the FDA cited the presence of foreign material-pieces of blue plastic found during production-as the reason for the recall.
All of the peanut butter products listed under this event were assigned a Class II risk level by the FDA.
What States Are Impacted
According to the FDA, the recalled peanut butter products were shipped to the following 40 states:
Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
What Happens Next
The FDA will continue to list the entries as ongoing until the recall is terminated, and consumers and institutions will be expected to check lot codes against the FDA database and remove matching items from use.
As of the latest update, the FDA reports no recall termination date and notes that no update history is available for the affected products.
