Salmon Recall Update as FDA Sets Risk Level

A lot of farm‑raised Atlantic salmon sold in seven states has been recalled after federal testing found it was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to an announcement published on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.

Newsweek contacted the recalling firm Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., for comment via email.

What To Know

The voluntary recall involves Wellsley Farms Farm‑Raised Atlantic Salmon, sold in 32‑ounce (2‑pound / 907‑gram) packages, according to FDA records.

It was recalled because it was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause short-term illness in healthy individuals and trigger serious health concerns in pregnant women due to a risk of stillbirth or miscarriage.

The FDA lists 190 cases of salmon as affected.

The recall is identified by recall number H‑0541‑2026 and applies to lot 3896, with a production date of June 30, 2025, a best‑by date of June 30, 2027, and UPC code 888670025963.

It is tied to FDA Event ID 98424 and was voluntarily initiated by the firm.

FDA records list the recall status as ongoing.

The recall was initiated on February 10, 2026, and the FDA assigned a Class II risk classification on March 4.

The recalling firm is Slade Gorton & Co., Inc., headquartered at 255 Bear Hill Road, Suite 401, Waltham, Massachusetts.

In a company announcement posted by the FDA, Slade Gorton & Co., Inc. said it was recalling one lot of the salmon product sold at BJ's Wholesale Club stores.

The company said the contamination was discovered through a sample collected randomly by the FDA.

“The presence of Listeria monocytogenes was found through a sample collected randomly by the FDA,” Slade Gorton & Co., Inc said in a statement, adding that it was “investigating how the contamination occurred and taking steps to keep it from happening again.”

According to the announcement, the recalled salmon was sold only at BJ's Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia between January 31 and February 7, 2026.

The fish, which was labeled as being farmed in Norway and a product of Poland, was packaged in 2‑pound bags bearing the Wellsley Farms logo, with the UPC code and lot number printed on the reverse of the packaging.

The company said no illnesses have been reported to date.

BJ's Wholesale Club is directly notifying members who may have purchased the product and is offering refunds.

What Is Listeria Monocytogenes?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious infections.

The announcement states that healthy individuals may experience short‑term symptoms, including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

It also notes that Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Consumers who experience symptoms consistent with Listeria infection are advised in the announcement to consult a health care provider.

What Is a Class II Recall?

The FDA classified the salmon recall as Class II.

Under FDA definitions, a Class II recall is issued when use of or exposure to a product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or when the probability of serious adverse health consequences is considered remote.
