New Skyscraper Sets Record for Most Floors in North America

The construction of Toronto's Pinnacle SkyTower has reached its top-floor level, making it the tallest building in Canada and the first residential building in North America to hit 106 floors.

Reaching a final height of 352 meters (around 1,154 feet), the imposing tower will be completed later this year, a spokesperson for the team behind it told Newsweek.

Developed by Pinnacle International, the SkyTower forms part of the larger Pinnacle One Yonge development in Toronto’s Central Waterfront. The building will house 985 residential units, as well as the new Le Méridien Toronto Pinnacle Hotel and various amenities. Featuring balconies spanning up to the 88th floor and floor-to-ceiling windows, residents can enjoy unrestricted views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline.

“Now that we've reached the 106-storey mark, you can really feel the momentum accelerating,” Anson Kwok, vice president of sales and marketing at Pinnacle International, said in a statement. “Pinnacle SkyTower offers the exclusive opportunity to live in a fully customized home in the tallest building in Canada, creating a new standard for luxury living in Toronto,” Kwok added.

Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, the Pinnacle SkyTower is one of the country's first supertall skyscrapers, which are buildings that stand 300 meters (around 984 feet) or higher, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

The SkyTower has a unique 12-sided, tapered design with an aerodynamic profile that aims to “evoke the form of a 12-sided jewel,” the architectural firm describes. The tower blends its waterfront-inspired design elements with more angular, diamond-shaped geometry that speaks to its urban surroundings and proximity to downtown Toronto.

Once built, the SkyTower will overtake One Bloor West, Canada's first-ever supertall building, which reached its 300-meter mark last July.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the architectural firm founded by the famed British architect Norman Foster, One Bloor West will stand at 308.6 meters (around 1,012 feet)-or 85 stories-after its construction is complete.

The milestone hit by One Bloor West comes about a year after developers received the green light to proceed with the construction of the tallest building in North America-the Legends Tower-which will be set in Oklahoma City.

With a planned height of 1,907 feet-surpassing the 1,776-foot-tall One World Trade Center in New York City by 131 feet, once completed-the Legends Tower will also be the sixth-tallest building in the world. Construction is set to begin in 2026 and is expected to be finished by 2030.
