Milk Recall Update As FDA Sets Risk Level

Several Wawa milk products sold across four states are being recalled, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formally assigning the action an official risk level weeks after the recall was first initiated.

Wawa announced the recall in mid‑February as a precautionary step.

The FDA has now reviewed the case and assigned an official Class II risk level, marking the next stage in the recall process.

Newsweek has contacted Wawa via email for comment.

What To Know

The recall affects four 16‑ounce Wawa milk beverages sold at a limited number of Wawa stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, according to company and FDA records.

Products included are Wawa Double Dutch Chocolate Milk, Wawa Chocolate Milk, Wawa Cookies & Cream Milk, and Wawa 2 percent Reduced Fat Milk.

All were sold refrigerated in plastic pint‑size bottles.

Wawa said the products were recalled after identifying the potential presence of soft plastic material on a production fill line.

While no confirmed reports of plastic pieces being found in the beverages were received, the company said the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution due to the risk of choking.

The company also said there have been no confirmed reports of injuries linked to the recalled products.

"While we have received no confirmed reports of any of the soft plastic pieces being present in these products, they are being recalled out of an abundance of caution," the company said in a press release.

"Additionally, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries due to consumption of these products."

According to Wawa, the affected beverages were removed from sale and disposed of by impacted stores as of February 18, 2026.

No Wawa locations outside the four listed states were affected, and no other Wawa‑branded products were included in the recall.

FDA enforcement records list the recall under multiple recall numbers - H‑0588‑2026, H‑0587‑2026, H‑0586‑2026, and H‑0585‑2026 - all tied to Event ID 98480.

Each recall was voluntarily initiated by Wawa Beverage Company, which is based in Media, Pennsylvania.

The recall was initiated on February 17, 2026. On March 18, 2026, the FDA completed its review and formally classified the recall as Class II, assigning an official risk level.

The recall remains ongoing, and no termination date has been announced.

Consumers who may have purchased the recalled milk products are urged not to consume them and to dispose of them or seek a refund through Wawa's customer service channels.

What Is a Class II Recall?

The FDA uses a Class II recall designation when use of, or exposure to, a product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or when the probability of serious health effects is considered remote.

This classification reflects the FDA's assessment after reviewing the circumstances of the recall.

While Class II recalls are not the agency's most severe category, they still indicate a product issue that warrants consumer awareness and corrective action.
