One proud German shepherd parent posted about the specific milestone on Reddit's r/germanshepherds, saying, "His ears are standing up now…should I start packing his bags for college?'
Welcome to the Raptor Phase
The comments immediately turned into a mix of celebration and playful warnings from experienced owners. They joked that upright ears mean better hearing, even more for things they are not supposed to hear.
One said, "Awwwhh both ears are up now. Now you'll begin noticing that his hearing is more selective. Good luck with this phase of puppyhood!"
Others talked about how upright ears are a warning sign for the teenage phase. One said, "When the ears pop up that's the warning signal before they turn into Raptors for the next two years." Another added, "Wait for the 6-24 month T-Rex phase."
Longtime German shepherd owners know this phase all too well.

Why German Shepherd Ears Standing Up is Such a Big Deal
For many pet parents, upright ears are among the breed's most recognizable features. German shepherd puppies are usually born with floppy ears, and they gradually begin standing anywhere between eight weeks and six months old.
Some puppies go through hilarious "one up, one down" stages for weeks before both ears finally commit.
Teething can make the process even stranger. Cartilage development uses calcium, causing some puppies to temporarily lose ear stiffness while adult teeth come in. This is why some pet parents say that they often wake up to completely different ears every morning.
Even this puppy's dad admitted he's been watching those changes happen in real time.
"Definitely! It's everyday I notice change. Sometimes I'll notice them after a nap!" he wrote in the comments.
Can You Help a German Shepherd's Ears Stand Naturally?
Most healthy German Shepherd puppies develop upright ears without intervention, especially if they come from strong breeding lines. Nutrition and chewing during teething play a role. Jaw and ear muscles share a connection that few people realize.
Chewing on appropriate toys can support healthy ear development. Some GSD parents avoid ear touching during the early months to allow the cartilage to form.
Still, every dog is different. Some shepherds take longer, and a few never get fully upright ears at all. You should start worrying if the ears do not go up after teething finishes.
To be honest, floppy-eared German shepherds still have plenty of fans.
A Tiny Milestone That Feels Much Bigger
To outsiders, a puppy's ears standing up might seem small. To dog parents, it feels like one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments that quietly mark the end of babyhood.
Every German shepherd owner has experienced some version of it. At one point, it hits you. The tiny puppy who could barely climb onto the couch now looks like a full-grown dog staring at you.
