TikTok influencer, nurse and father allegedly killed for his chain in downtown Oakland
Lartey Solomon spent his workdays caring for patients and his free time explaining health issues online, where followers knew him as "Nurse Solomon."
Now, the 33-year-old registered nurse, father and health content creator is being remembered by relatives and supporters after he was fatally shot May 31 in downtown Oakland.
A Vallejo man has been charged with murder in the killing, which prosecutors allege happened during an attempted robbery.
Shacory Carnell Daniels, 39, is accused of shooting Solomon as he walked to his vehicle near 14th and Harrison streets, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
Daniels was charged with murder, an attempted robbery-related felony, personal and intentional discharge of a firearm, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, prosecutors said.
Oakland police said officers responded shortly after 2:45 a.m. to reports of a shooting on the 1400 block of Harrison Street. Officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, and paramedics took him to a hospital, where he died, police said.
Solomon's death drew attention beyond the Bay Area because of his online presence as a health educator. His TikTok account offered medical advice to more than 20,000 followers.
His family said in an online fundraiser that Solomon was born and raised in Ghana before moving to the United States. He studied at Merritt College and earned a bachelor of science in nursing degree from Samuel Merritt University.
He worked as a registered nurse at Alameda Health Care and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro, according to the GoFundMe organized by his brother, Emmanuel Solomon.
"As a nurse, caring for others was more than a profession - it was his calling," the family wrote. "He was passionate about educating people on their health and empowering them to make informed decisions about their well-being."
Family members told KTVU Solomon and a friend had left a nightclub and were walking to their cars when someone approached them and asked for a chain around his neck.
Solomon's friend told his mother that he was walking toward his own car when he heard gunshots, she told KTVU.
Daniels was arrested June 4 in Menlo Park, according to prosecutors. He was arraigned Monday at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland and is being held without bail. His next hearing, where he is scheduled to enter a plea, is set for June 30.
Court records show Daniels has previous felony convictions in Alameda, Contra Costa and Orange counties, according to prosecutors.
Solomon's family described him as devoted to his daughter and to relatives in both the United States and Ghana. The fundraiser says donations will help pay for funeral expenses and support his daughter and father in Ghana.
"Lartey will be remembered not for the violence that took him from us," the family wrote, "but for the compassion he showed, the sacrifices he made, and the love he poured into the world every single day of his life."
