The expressive pup got a lot of love for his face, with Ellie's video getting over a million views on TikTok. Commenters flooded the video commiserating about their own guilt-tripping pets:
"when my chocolate lab does this I call it his Eeyore time"
"I pet mine and he pre- cries cause I'll stop eventually"
Even Pedigree got in on the action saying: "He takes cuddle time VERY seriously."
Despite her lab having lots of feelings, Ellie assured everyone via the video that he is completely fine. Just filled with a lot of feelings!
Do Dogs Feel Guilty?
Dogs feel a wide range of emotions, but guilt is a bit complex. Scientific research and different brain scans done on canines show that they possess the same neurological structures and hormones that produce emotions that we have as humans. A dog's emotional capacity and ability is most closely related to that of a human toddler.
While dogs do show signs of guilt, most experts agree that guilt is too complicated of an emotion for a dog to process. What looks like guilt is more likely fear that they've done something wrong and will be punished. Dogs can also experience sadness, so that may be what you're seeing when you feel like your dog is particularly guilty.
Regardless of science, our animals definitely have big hearts and lots of feelings. Some bigger than others! And when they come to us wanting a little extra loving, like Ellie's sweet chocolate lab, who are we to say no?
