Nancy Guthrie Update: Major Search Underway for Grave Near Nogales, Mexico

A missing person's group in Mexico is conducting a major search operation in an area of that country called Mariposa near Nogales, after receiving an anonymous tip that Nancy Guthrie is buried there. The group has not found Guthrie, but is still searching.

According to The New York Post, the information came from a group that "works to locate missing people in Mexico." The group searched for Guthrie after receiving "an anonymous tip that she was buried around the border in an unmarked grave."

The information came from Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, head of Buscando Corazones Nogales, The Post reported. The Post report mirrors one in the Spanish-language news site, El Imparcial, which reported on June 11, 2026: "Nogalense collective receives anonymous report on whereabouts of Nancy Guthrie." El Imparcial reported that a search was underway on June 11 as a result of the tip.

Authorities in the U.S. or Mexico have not confirmed the credibility or lack thereof of the tip.

Nancy Guthrie Has Not Yet Been Found, But the Group Says It's Still Searching

However, no grave site has been found, despite the tip, added El Imparcial, which noted that the area had been searched before. However, the search is still underway.

"Ayala Ortiz stated that they will continue conducting search operations in the area with the aim of finding the remains of the U.S. citizen and other missing persons," El Imparcial reported.

The tipster told the group that Guthrie, 84, "had been buried in one of the arroyos in the area known as Mariposa, located west of Nogales near the Arizona border," El Imparcial reported.

Guthrie is the mother of TODAY Show co-host, Savannah Guthrie. She disappeared from her Tucson, AZ, home in the early morning hours of February 1 and hasn't been seen since. Authorities in Pima County said in earlier news conferences that Guthrie was last seen having dinner with her daughter and son-in-law, who have been ruled out as suspects.

She was dropped off at home, and her Apple watch disconnected in the early morning hours. Authorities previously released a set of chilling photos of a masked and armed man that they obtained from Guthrie's door cam, but they have never publicly announced any suspect or motive in the high-profile case. Whether Nancy Guthrie is dead or alive is not clear.

The Tipster Claimed That Nancy Guthrie Is Buried in a Grave 'Near a Stream'

The tip to the Mexican group claimed that Guthrie is buried near a stream.

"We received an anonymous call stating that the woman's remains were in the Mariposa area, in a grave near a stream; we have come now to search this stream, which we hadn't been able to explore during the initial operation," Ayala Ortiz told El Imparcial, which published a photo of people digging.

Although Guthrie has not been found, the group told El Imparcial that it had previously "discovered more than 25 clandestine graves and recovered the remains of at least 32 individuals."

The U.S.- Mexico border crossing in the area is known as the Nogales-Mariposa crossing. The U.S. State Department urges Americans to reconsider travel to the Sonora state that includes part of Nogales. "Many violent crimes take place in Mexico. They include homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, sexual assault, and robbery. There is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Mexico," the State Department notes. There have been cartel violence and arrests in the area.
