Netflix Quietly Canceled 2 Shows From ‘Stranger Things' Creators

Following their Stranger Things success, the Duffer Brothers were set to work on an adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Staub's New York Times best-selling novel The Talisman.

The brothers initially signed on to create an adaptation for the beloved series back in 2021. The show, which didn't make it off the production floor before Netflix reportedly canceled what would have been the duo's next show.

In a conversation with CBR, Ross Duffer shared that, "Sadly, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we're not involved." He revealed the project has been in development hell for quite some time.

"When I interned, when I was really, you know, back in college at Kennedy Marshall, I remember reading, I think it was a movie script for Talisman. So it's been in development forever, so I'm sorry that we were not the ones to break the curse," he said.

'The Boroughs' Canceled After Just 1 Season

While they weren't able to bring The Talisman to Netflix, the Duffer Brothers did bring The Boroughs to Netflix, but just for one season. According to Deadline, the latest show from the production duo won't be back for a second season after being canceled by Netflix.

"The news comes as somewhat of a surprise. Deadline hears there had been talk about renewing the series starring Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters and Bill Pullman, and a Season 2 writers room had been opened, a standard practice for many high-profile series," Deadline wrote.

It also reported Netflix was in talks to film Season 2 and 3 back-to-back, but poor viewership for the new series doomed its future.

The Duffer Brothers Left for Paramount

The latest cancellation comes just two months after the Duffer Brothers officially left Netflix for a new lucrative contract with Paramount.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to be joining the Paramount family," the brothers said in a statement at the time. "To be part of that mission is not just exciting – it's the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. And to do so at a studio with such a storied Hollywood legacy is a privilege we don't take lightly.

"We're also excited to reunite with our friends Cindy [Holland] and Matt [Thunell], who were among the very first to believe in us and an unusual little script we wrote that became ‘Stranger Things.' They took a chance on us in 2015, and they're taking a chance again – we can't wait to create new stories together."

The animated Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is now the lone title left from the Duffer Brothers coming to Netflix.
