Water-wise tip: Rebates help save money as well as water

This is part of a weekly feature in Home & Garden, highlighting ways residents can save water.

▪  Make use of rebate programs.

Several local water providers – including the city of Sacramento – offer rebate programs for toilets and clothes washers, the biggest indoor water users in our homes. Toilets and clothes washers combined account for about 45 percent of indoor water use.

How much can you save? The average family does about 300 loads of laundry a year; that can add up to more than 12,000 gallons, according to water efficiency experts. EnergyStar-certified washers use one-third less water – a 4,000-gallon savings. These washers use less electricity, too, representing more savings.

To find out which rebates are available for your home, contact your local water provider. Find a list of current rebate programs at the Regional Water Authority’s Be Water Smart rebate webpage.
