In August vegetable garden, plant ahead
The more you pick, the more you get. Enjoy the peak of flavor from your summer garden. Promptly harvest tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons and eggplant; that also will help keep some of those bushes and vines producing into fall.
Elsewhere in the August garden:
▪ Start the fall vegetable garden. Plant onions, lettuce, peas, radishes, turnips, beets, carrots and potatoes directly into vegetable beds.
▪ Transplant lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower seedlings.
▪ Sow seeds of California poppies, clarkia and African daisies.
▪ Transplant cool-weather annuals such as pansies, violas, fairy primroses, calendulas, stocks and snapdragons.
