Cover pool, save water

This is part of a weekly feature in Home & Garden, highlighting ways residents can save water.

•  Install a pool cover or spa cover to reduce evaporation.

On average, pools and spas lose 1/4 inch of water per day; double that in hot or windy weather. That adds up to more than 91 inches a year.

For a typical 12-by-24-foot pool, that’s about 16,250 gallons lost to evaporation. A pool cover can put a lid on that loss.
