43rd annual Sierra Nevada Arts & Crafts Festival

Where: Bristol’s Ranch House Cafe, 961 Highway 4, Arnold

When: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. July 4 and 5

More than 60 vendors will offer handmade crafts and homemade goodies. Enjoy the Ebbetts Pass Independence Day parade at 10 a.m. Saturday. Come early either day for pancake breakfast. Members of the volunteer fire department offer Calaveras County beers for sale. Listen to country swing music and enjoy other entertainment, too.

Learn about the cemetery’s garden of old roses while helping the bushes look their summer best. Help volunteers snip off spent blooms (“deadheading”) and other summer chores in the cool of the evening. Bring gloves and pruning sheers.

State Fair

Where: Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento

When: July 10-26; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Sunday

Admission: $12 general; seniors (age 62 and up), $10; youths (ages 5-12), $8; children ages 4 and younger admitted free; parking, $10.

Visit the UC Master Gardeners at the fair’s Farm for advice on growing just about anything. Check out the new water-wise gardens as well as chefs’ demonstrations at the outdoor kitchen stage.
