Hints From Heloise: When charities send gifts

DEAR HELOISE: I need advice about calendars from various charities I’ve donated to. Most are from animal-rescue groups. What I can do with them? Whatever you suggest will be kindly appreciated. Thank you!

Julie E., Oxnard

DEAR JULIE: Contact the charities and tell them not send you the “thank you” gifts in the first place. It will save them money. Or see if nursing homes, elementary schools or day-care centers could use them. Or turn them over and use as scratch notepaper!

DEAR HELOISE: My time-saving hint to “silk” corn on the cob: Remove the shucks. Hold the corn ear upright and use a clean plastic scrub pad. Start at the top and brush down. This removes the silk fast and easily.
