Water-wise tip: Redirect gray water from tub to trees

Reader Ann Ragland Browns of Citrus Heights suggested this idea:

“I discovered a way to use ‘gray water’ from my bath, which I have been feeling guilty about,” she said. “Using a small submersible pump and attaching a hose that goes out to the window in front of tub, I can water my fruit trees and almost everything in the small backyard. I am thinking of attaching a longer hose and doing the trees in front.”

Most plants can cope with gray water, especially if the alternative is no water at all. The key is to use biodegradable soap and shampoo that won’t harm plants. Make sure the water has cooled to room temperature before pumping it to the landscape.
