For dog owners who work at home, every day is Take Your Dog to Work Day. For everyone else, today’s the big day for a little canine companionship at the workplace.
Pet Sitters International created the ersatz holiday in 1999 to promote dog adoptions. It’s celebrated each year on the Friday after Father’s Day.
Some workplaces, such as Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle and Clif Bar in Emeryville, are dog-friendly year-round. Perhaps not surprisingly, several of the larger dog-friendly companies are pet food manufacturers.
A survey by Wellness Natural Pet Food finds that 41 percent of pet owners say a pet-friendly workplace is important to them. Millennials feel most strongly, with 52 percent seeking pet-friendly workplaces, followed by 33 percent of Baby Boomers and 31 percent of Generation X workers. And 91 percent say they feel more loyal to a company that welcomes their pets.
