Get an inside look at new Sacramento ice cream shop Licked. It has some unusual flavors
Meant as “100% a love letter to Oak Park,” Licked ice cream shop has brought new energy to Broadway on Friday and Saturday nights, according to owner Susan Stewart.
“The ice cream store is not only helping my business across the street, it’s helping all the little shops surrounding it,” Stewart said of her shop, which opened in May.
Stewart said while the shop doesn’t make a lot of money – just enough to cover rent and employee wages – it has succeeded in drawing customers through Oak Park.
“I’ve had so many people tell me they’re stoked to have something within walking distance,” Stewart said. “It’s like it’s just a good little hub for our neighborhood.”
The shop’s bright pink interior features a shelf lined with ice-cream themed merchandise, disco balls and a giant mint chocolate chip ice cream cone. By the register, a neon sign proclaims “I licked it so it’s mine.”
“It was not intended to go in the ice cream shop, but it was in my kitchen for the last year and a half. It’s like a little piece of me as well,” she said.
Licked has a rotating selection of 16 ice cream flavors from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream including Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (a cheesecake ice cream with raspberry, chocolate and Oreo cookies) and Blue Moon (which tastes like Fruit Loop cereal milk). For the end of summer, the shop has introduced two new flavors: ube chai (a swirl of purple yam and coconut chai) and blackberry lemon bar.
“I’m hoping that we buy enough of it and that Sacramento is enough of a force that we can get (Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream) to make more,” Stewart said.
Along with single-scoop ice cream, Licked sells sundaes like the Sacra-mint-o: mint chocolate chip ice cream with brownie bites, hot fudge and chocolate sprinkles.
Licked is located at 3400 Broadway, and is open Sunday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.
