Acclaimed midtown Sacramento eatery announces closure at start of new year. What happened?

A beloved and critically acclaimed restaurant in Sacramento’s Ice Blocks shopping center will close at the end of the year, its ownership said Saturday.

Beast and Bounty, a restaurant known for its California cuisine located at 1701 R St., announced in a post to its Facebook page that the eatery will “permanently close its doors” next Wednesday, Jan. 1.

“Despite years of financial challenges and a sincere effort to renegotiate our lease, we have reached an amicable agreement to part ways with Heller Pacific,” restaurant owner Michael Hargis wrote on the eatery’s Facebook page. Heller Pacific is the developer that owns Ice Blocks.

Additionally, in a text message to The Sacramento Bee that Hargis said “we are overcome with sadness for what could have been yet full of gratitude for what was.”

“We have been beyond humbled to see the response from our patrons and look forward to creating another concept that this city can be proud of,” Hargis said. “From the bottom of our heart, thank you Sacramento. It has been a joy to serve you at Beast + Bounty.”

The dining spot in 2023 and 2024 earned a place on the Michelin Guide’s “recommended” list of Sacramento restaurants, formerly known as Michelin “Plates,” an honor it also took home in 2022.

The restaurant is rated a 4.3 out of 5 stars with a total of 609 reviews on Google. On Yelp, the restaurant is rated a 3.7 out of 5 stars from a total of 1,107 reviews.

“I’ve heard good things about Beast and Bounty over the years, so there was a lot of build up before trying it,” wrote a recent Yelp reviewer, who left a comment Dec. 14. “I was a little worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but it met and exceeded my expectations!”

Hargis wrote on Facebook that closing was “without question, the hardest decision.”

“We remain grateful for every guest who walked through our doors, every memory made, and every opportunity to bring our vision to life here in Sacramento,” the Facebook post said.

What’s on the menu?

Beast and Bounty serves on their dinner menu various fresh, grilled or wood-fried options such as their steak, chicken, burger, halibut, octopus, oyster, brussels sprout and cauliflower.

The establishment also serves Sunday brunch. It offers a variety of breakfast and lunch options including steak, eggs, bagels, oats and candied pistachios.

“One of my favorite places in town! Great decor, delicious food and cool vibe,” another Yelp review said.

What are the hours on final days?

The restaurant may be closed starting 2025, but for the next few days it will be open.

Their hours of operation are:

Sunday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tuesday: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
