Man arrested in Yuba County after deputy fired gun but missed suspect, sheriff says
An armed suspect was arrested after a deputy-involved shooting Thursday evening, Northern California law enforcement said in a news release posted to social media.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a 911 call at approximately 8:55 p.m. and a woman could be heard arguing with a man, telling him to “put the gun down,” officials said.
Deputies made their way to the caller’s residence at the 4700 block of Fleming Way in Olivehurst.
Upon arrival, according to the news release, officers found a male suspect “severely intoxicated, armed with a firearm and making threats.”
Deputies made repeated attempts to diffuse the situation, the news release said. The suspect began reaching for his gun and one of the deputies fired his handgun, officials said.
The Sheriff’s Office news release said the suspect was not hit by the deputy’s gunfire; however, two other deputies “successfully deployed their less lethal weapons” and the suspect was taken into custody.
After the suspect is cleared for minor injuries sustained from the less-lethal weapons, he will be booked at the Yuba County Jail, according to the news release.
The suspect faces charges of making threats to a peace officer, carrying a loaded firearm in public, carrying brass metal knuckles and public intoxication, deputies said.
What happens to deputy who shot at suspect?
According to the Yuba Sheriff’s County Office, the deputy who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
When there is a deputy-involved shooting, the incident is investigated by the Yuba-Sutter officer-involved-shooting and critical incident investigation team, led by chief investigators of the Yuba and Sutter County district attorneys’ offices, according to the news release.
