A Sacramento-area brew was named ‘Best in Show’ among California craft beers
An up-and-coming Sacramento-area brewery won the top award at the 2025 Brewers Cup of California ceremony on Friday.
Geisthaus Brewing Co. in Rosemont, which opened in February, was named the “Best in Show” among the state’s breweries for its “Progenitor” beer, a German Kellerbier.
On its website, the brewery describes the winning beer as “refreshingly crisp and aromatically charged,” with notes of “crispy sourdough loaves and fresh herbs spritzed with lemon.”
Geisthaus Brewing won two other awards Friday: First place in the German Helles category for “Hallowed” and second place in the Marzen category for “Stormbond.”
The Geisthaus brewery and taproom, at 9584 Micron Ave., is operated by co-owners Brady Jones, Benjamin Allgood and Brian Mackie, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting.
This year’s Brewers Cup is the fifth annual competition, hosted by the Sacramento Area Brewers Guild. The awards ceremony was held at the Crest Theatre in downtown Sacramento Friday evening.
More than 200 California breweries submitted over a thousand beer entries across 64 beer style categories, according to a news release from the Brewers Cup.
The Brewery of the Year award was given to Morgan Territory in Tracy, and the Guild of the Year award — awarded to “the brewers guild whose membership collectively medaled highest in the competition,” according to the competition’s news release — was given to the Los Angeles County Brewers Guild.
The Sacramento Area Brewers Guild won 28 awards across 18 breweries, including nine gold medals in specific beer categories.
Auburn Alehouse, 289 Washington St. in Auburn, won the gold medal in the American India Pale Ale category, which had 138 entries, the most of any category.
A full list of winners is available on the Brewers Cup of California website.
The awards ceremony was one of the first events for the 2025 Sacramento Beer Week, which started Friday and will run through May 4.
