It’s been an East Sacramento hot spot for 14 years. But this Greek restaurant is closing

Longtime East Sacramento restaurant Opa! Opa! will close for good next month, its owners announced Friday afternoon on Facebook.

Opa! Opa! will shut its doors on Dec. 15 after 14 years at 5644 J St., according to a post by Phil Courey and Mariann Isola. The Greek and Mediterranean restaurant was a favorite of many East Sacramento residents and Sacramento State students, but struggled to draw business amid increasing surrounding food options and the former Sutter Memorial Hospital’s demolition.

“We thank you so much and we are so grateful for your support and love of our wonderful restaurant,” the post read. ”In the last few years, we really have tried hard to perform however; the market dictates and competition is stiff and saturated, as well as pressures from ever increasing wages.”

The owners previously wrote on Facebook in October 2018 that they could be forced to close if business did not pick up.

“We humbly send out this heartfelt SOS today asking for your continued support to keep our business open and the wonderful staff we have employed so that we can continue to serve our delicious Greek/Mediterranean food,” the October 2018 post read.
