Midtown brewery tripling in size, adding restaurant in taking over former Press Bistro spot

Fieldwork Brewing Co. is expanding to fill the midtown Sacramento space vacated by The Press Bistro two weeks ago, the Berkeley-based brewery announced in a press release Tuesday.

Use of The Press Bistro’s former kitchen will allow Fieldwork to produce pizzas as well as brunch, appetizers, salads, desserts, and kids meals. Fieldwork’s existing taproom next door at 1805 Capitol Ave., which will remain open during construction, is limited to sandwiches and a few bar snacks.

Fieldwork’s outdoor patio will triple in size as the restaurant/taproom’s reach swells from 1,400 to 4,900 square feet, making it one of the Handle District’s largest tenants. It’ll add an indoor lounge area and handcrafted wood tables before opening in spring 2020, according to the release.

“We’re grateful for the support of the Sacramento community over the past three years and have been actively looking for opportunities to expand our presence,” co-founder and owner Barry Braden said in the press release. “When the space adjoining our Sacramento Taproom became available, we jumped on it.”

Fieldwork has churned out more than 500 different beers for commercial sales since opening in February 2015. The brewery also has taprooms in San Mateo, Monterey, San Ramon and Napa’s Oxbow Public Market, with another soon to open in Corte Madera.

The Press Bistro was a critical darling over its 10-year run at 1809 Capitol Ave., but chef/owner David English opted to close after New Year’s Eve, citing rent increases.
