Opa! Opa!, Elk Grove fine dining restaurant fail Sacramento County health inspections

Opa! Opa! is on its way out of East Sacramento, and upkeep appears to have lagged.

The Greek/Mediterranean restaurant at 5644 J St. failed its Sacramento County Environmental Management District inspection Wednesday for reasons not made public as of Thursday morning. Opa! Opa! announced plans in December to move to an unspecified midtown location; that transition will likely happen next month, according to its Facebook page.

Silva’s Sheldon Inn Restaurant & Bar, a 32-year-old white-tablecloth restaurant at 9000 Grant Line Rd., also failed inspection Wednesday after more than 100 mouse droppings were found throughout, county records show. Silva’s also suffered a major violation for not time-stamping 25 unrefrigerated containers of whipped butter, all of which were discarded during the inspection.

The restaurant passed its reinspection later the same day, according to county records.

South Area Market at 5220 Fruitridge Rd. failed its inspection Wednesday as well, the third time it had been inspected since a conditional pass on Jan. 28 for a mild cockroach infestation, hot and cold holding violations and improper broth cooling methods.

The Laotian to-go restaurant was closed for an animal/vermin infestation again Wednesday and had yet to reopen as of Thursday morning. It previously passed inspections on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30.

A handful of high-profile restaurants including Kru Contemporary Japanese Cuisine, Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse, Limelight Bar & Cafe, Cliff House of Folsom and Jack’s Urban Eats in Elk Grove conditionally passed inspection in the last week.

Approximately 1 percent of all inspections result in failures among Sacramento County’s 6,500 retail food permit holders, Sacramento County EMD spokeswoman Brenda Bongiorno said. Each facility is inspected a minimum of three times annually.
