Curtis Park tiki bar closes permanently after 10 years, replacement sought

The tiki torches have gone out at The Hideaway Bar & Grill, the tropical-themed restaurant and bar tucked away on a roadside island just south of Broadway in Sacramento’s Curtis Park.

Owner Mariah York-Carr closed The Hideaway for good around the start of the shelter-in-place order, property manager Dave Carlson confirmed Tuesday. York-Carr opened the tiki bar at 2565 Franklin Blvd. in 2010 and paired fruity drinks and sports bar food with a range of entertainment such as live music, trivia nights and billiards.

The 2,550-square-foot building and 900-square-foot enclosed patio come with a large paved parking lot, which Carlson said a new tenant might opt to use for socially distanced outdoor seating, as well as a dirt overflow lot. The property could be used for several types of businesses, as it’s in a C-2 general commercial zone, but Carlson said he’d prefer something public-facing like another restaurant or bar.

“I’d like to have more of the same. I think it was a good business,” Carlson said. “She did great. Unfortunately, we couldn’t work it out to continue. It’s sad to be back on the market, but hey, Curtis Park needs another great operator to step up and run it.”

Signs bearing The Hideaway’s name on the building’s exterior have been taken down, windows have been boarded up and a gate blocks the main entrance.

York-Carr surrendered The Hideaway’s California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control license Monday, according to the state agency’s online portal. She did not reply to multiple requests for comment.
