Year-old Boulevard Park restaurant and coffee shop Simpleton Cafe closes for good

A closed restaurant

Simpleton Cafe has permanently closed after just over a year in Sacramento’s Boulevard Park neighborhood, according to parent company Identity Coffees’ website.

Simpleton opened at 701 19th St. in June 2019, filling a 1,700-square foot space once occupied by Save Rite Market. It served Identity coffee drinks as well as breakfast, lunch and brunch in the former deli/liquor store at G and 19th streets.

“We (are) sad to announce Simpleton Cafe’s permanent closure,” Identity’s website said. “We appreciate all the customers and community which were a part of (the) life of our cafe. We are very grateful — best regards and stay well.”

Simpleton’s decor was somewhere between minimalist and old-school diner, with unpretentious wood furniture, black-and-white menus, retro plates and an in-use vinyl record player. Popular food items included breakfast burritos, basic sandwiches and chocolate-hazelnut waffles.

Insight Coffee Roasters co-founder Lucky Rodrigues opened Identity in 2016 with his wife, Vanessa, and business partner, Ryan Rake. The trio also opened Westside Cafe in West Sacramento in fall 2018.
