P.F. Chang’s closes downtown Sacramento location that was burglarized following protests
P.F. Chang’s China Bistro has permanently closed its downtown Sacramento restaurant, a spokesperson for the Scottsdale-based chain confirmed Friday.
The Chinese restaurant at 1530 J St., Suite 100, has been boarded up for several weeks since it was burglarized following local protests over George Floyd’s death. Those boards came down within the last few days, showing an empty dining room. P.F. Chang’s had previously been open for takeout and dine-in.
P.F. Chang’s helped brighten a once-blighted downtown corner across from the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium when it opened in 2003 alongside Mikuni. A Bee article from that December marveled at common sink between the men’s and women’s restrooms, with one manager calling it “a destination restroom.”
Philip Chiang and Paul Fleming co-founded P.F. Chang’s in 1993 and became the first American chain to emphasize cooking in woks. It was later acquired by New York private equity firm TriArtisan Capital Advisors, which also owns TGI Friday’s and Sur La Table.
P.F. Chang’s has more than 300 locations worldwide, including one in Roseville. Fleming went on to open Paul Martin’s American Grill in Roseville, as well.
More than 20 Sacramento-area restaurants have closed permanently since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Click here for a more complete list.
