These 35 new restaurants just opened around Sacramento. Here’s what you have to try.
Sacramento is hot, and so is its food scene.
At least 35 restaurants opened around the Sacramento region in August, far more than usually seen in a given month. The Sacramento Bee counted 21 new ones in July, for example, and 15 in June.
Some of that growth can be attributed to Sky River Casino, which opene in Elk Grove with several restaurants. But restaurants opened from Davis to El Dorado Hills in August, and suburbs such as Gold River, Fair Oaks and Sloughhouse all got new options.
32 Brews Street (1 Sky River Parkway, Elk Grove): One of many restaurants and bars to open in the new Sky River Casino this month, 32 Brews Street has sports bar bites in addition to 32 California beers and wines on tap. Eventually, the casino plans to house 17 restaurants.
Almighty Food Co. (4355 Town Center Blvd., Suite 114, El Dorado Hills): The newest El Dorado Hills Town Center restaurant from Milestone Restaurant & Bar and Mom & Pop Chicken Shop’s owners, Almighty’s entirely gluten-free menu includes preserved mushrooms quesadillas, avocado-topped everything bagels and Cuban sandwiches with a North Carolina influence.
Beach Hut Deli (9425 Jackson Road, Sacramento): Surf and sandwiches are up at this island-themed deli, which opened its 23rd area location on Aug. 15 at Cordova Golf Course.
Bibi’s Mexican Grill (2220 Gold Springs Court, Suite 102, Gold River): A well-liked taco truck that popped up in south Sacramento and Rancho Cordova over the last couple of years, Bibi’s first brick-and-mortar concept has the quesabirria tacos, loaded shrimp burritos and chicken enchiladas fans have grown to love.
Bodega Kitchen & Cocktails (6401 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento): This new Greenhaven restaurant has a menu that spans the Caribbean, from Puerto Rican sandwiches called tripletas to Trinidadian flatbreads called doubles to Jamaican jerk chicken wings.
Brickland Bistro (3301 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento): The menu rotates daily at this Italian replacement for 33rd Street Bistro, but customers can always expect a few pastas, a few pizzas and a few plates such as charred chicken with stone fruit chutney over pearl barley risotto.
Butcher’s Burgers (1 Sky River Parkway, Elk Grove): Patties are made from a house ground beef blend (or veggie mix for the meat-averse) and served with seasoned fries at Sky River Casino’s burger joint.
CA 99 Hot Chicken (1 Sky River Parkway, Elk Grove): Nashville-style chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders and sides such as coleslaw are on the menu at this stand in Sky River Casino’s food court.
Cocomilk Cafe (6519 Savings Place, Suite 225, Sacramento): A Laotian dessert cafe with a few savory options, Cocomilk introduced sweets such as “golden grams” (mashed mung beans and coconut boiled in egg yolks and syrup) to south Sacramento’s Little Saigon neighborhood.
Cluck ‘N Cone (1485 Eureka Road, Roseville): Fried chicken pieces come in waffle cones with six different flavor pairings — hot honey, for example, or pineapple chunks — at Lauren Garcia’s new concept, which opened Aug. 27.
Dave’s Hot Chicken (3409 Arden Way, Sacramento): Started as a Los Angeles parking lot pop-up in 2017, this Nashville-style hot chicken phenomenon now has more than 70 locations and a slew of celebrity investors. It opened on Aug. 5 in Arden Arcade.
Doughbot (2030 10th St., Sacramento): Alison Clevenger, the former executive pastry chef at Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates and Selland Family Restaurants, now whips up inventive doughnuts and other pastries at this Southside Park bakery that opened Aug. 2.
Double Shot Coffee Bar (3381 Bass Lake Road, Suite 100, El Dorado Hills): The Sienna Ridge Shopping Center’s new cafe serves panini, quiches, breakfast sandwiches and assorted pastries alongside its assortment of coffee drinks.
Frankie’s Pizza (200 K St., Sacramento): Father-daughter team Frank and Marissa Bell opened their 4,000-square foot Old Sacramento pizza parlor with a salad bar where 2 Grand Saloon had been on Aug. 10.
Fresh Wok Halal (8136 Gerber Road, Sacramento): Indian, Pakistani, Fijian and Afghan dishes are on the menu at this south Sacramento restaurant, which replaced Fresh Wok Express but kept part of the Chinese restaurant’s name.
Good Eats Deli (4884 San Juan Ave., Fair Oaks): You’ll find lamb gyro breakfast wraps, wasabi chicken breast sandwiches or Reubens with housemade red sauerkraut among this deli’s “good eats.”
Huckleberry’s Breakfast & Lunch (5181 Foothills Blvd., Roseville): A California chain with additional locations in Antelope, north Natomas and Elk Grove, Huckleberry’s specializes in diner staples with a slight bayou twist such as a sausage omelet topped with Cajun chili.
Jayna Gyro (3101 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento): Owner and Turkish native Yusuf Topal opened three Bay Area restaurants (including the original Jayna Gyro in Emeryville Public Market) before launching his Mediterranean concept in East Sacramento on Aug. 1.
Koi Palace Express (1 Sky River Parkway, Elk Grove): Sky River Casino’s main Chinese option began as a Daly City dim sum operation in 1996, and now rapidly turns out chow mein, Mongolian beef and mapo tofu to gamblers on the go.
Kyng’s BBQ (1600 Fulton Ave., Sacramento): Kyng’s barbecue truck opened a permanent location for smoked tri-tip salad, pulled pork sandwiches and “pit-tatoes” loaded with three different types of meat.
Lau Oc Viet (5555 Sky Parkway, Suite 243, Sacramento): Lau (hot pot) and oc (snails) are among the popular items at this neon-lit, seafood-focused Vietnamese restaurant in south Sacramento’s Little Saigon neighborhood.
Mochinut (516 2nd St., Davis): The Los Angeles-based mochi doughnut and Korean hot dog chain added Davis to a recent expansion that’s included downtown and south Sacramento, North Highlands and Roseville.
Mr. Burrito Grill (1208 Sacramento Ave., West Sacramento): Look for weekend pozole, tortas and salchipapa burgers at this drive-in Mexican restaurant, which opened first near the Power Inn Road/Folsom Boulevard intersection in Sacramento.
Naija Cuisine (7800 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights): Sacramento’s only Nigerian restaurant before closing earlier this year, Naija Cuisine has brought to-go dishes such as goat meat with fufu (pounded yam) or fish pepper soup to Citrus Heights.
Namaste Sacramandu (1148 Fulton Ave., Suite A, Sacramento): Arden Arcade’s new Nepalese restaurant embraces Indian and Chinese cuisines’ impact on Nepal’s, with dishes such as spiced chow mein and fish curry with mustard seeds.
Ocean 9 Sushi Cajun & Seafood (9171 Elk Grove Florin Road, Suite 6, Elk Grove): This all-you-can-eat sushi bar, hibachi grill and seafood boil first brought a range of Japanese meat and seafood to customers at its original Antioch location.
Olive Garden (3511 N. Freeway Blvd., Sacramento): The Italian-inspired chain restaurant brought its chicken Alfredo, five-cheese ziti and famous breadsticks to Natomas’ Promenade Shopping Mall in late August.
Salo’s Taqueria (4445 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento): Fajitas, chilaquiles and tacos soft and crunchy are on the menu at Old Foothill Farms’ new casual Mexican restaurant.
SR Prime Steakhouse (1 Sky River Parkway, Elk Grove): Get your wagyu, tomahawks and filets mignons at this Sky River Casino steakhouse, which also has a robust seafood menu.
Taqueria Mi Familia (5607 Hillsdale Blvd., Sacramento): Menu items at this Foothill Farms taqueria include fish filet rellenos, bistec encebollado (Puerto Rican-style steak with onions) and crab leg-topped molcajete.
The Slough House Kitchen (12700 Meiss Road, Sloughhouse): An upscale New American restaurant in the tiny Sacramento County town of Sloughhouse, this kitchen turns out charcuterie boards, pasta Bolognese and braised pork shoulder, among other dishes.
Tokyo Cream Japanese Choux Pastry (1906 Taylor Road, Suite 110, Roseville): Look for Japanese-inspired soft serve ice cream with flavors such as black sesame or matcha, plus boba drinks, baked goods and specialty coffees.
Tony’s Tacos (6425 Florin Perkins Road, Sacramento): Tony Cordova has expanded to a brick-and-mortar restaurant in southeastern Sacramento after years of serving quesabirria tacos from a truck on Stockton Boulevard, allowing for party platters and items like birria pizza.
University of Beer (1009 E. Bidwell St., Folsom): University of Beer’s sixth bar/restaurant (or is it campus?) has dozens of taps and bar bites such as burgers and loaded fries, as at most of Nate Yungvanitsait’s other locations.
West Coast Sourdough (1228 Galleria Blvd., Suite 100, Roseville): This San Francisco-based local chain brought its sandwiches, soups and salads to Creekside Shopping Center at the end of August.
