Sacramento’s Public House pours final beer as sports bar closes. What’s next?
Public House Downtown will close after 13 years of serving customers at 1132 16th St., the same building that housed the recently shuttered Station 16 restaurant.
The Sacramento sports pub announced the closure on social media and said it would host a “final pour” on Monday night, offering $4 pints and $6 large-format beers as part of the farewell.
“This decision was not made lightly,” said Mason Wong, co-owner of MAC Hospitality Group, in a statement released to several news outlets. “We’re deeply thankful to our dedicated team and loyal guests who have made Public House such a special part of the community.”
The closure will allow the company to retool the midtown space, and the statement detailed a plan to open a traditional Mexican restaurant called Casa Lola this fall. MAC Hospitality Group, a family-owned restaurant firm also operates Cafeteria 15L, Mas Taco Bar and Iron Horse Tavern.
Public House originally opened in 2012 as Firestone Public House, named after the historic tire shop that operated at the corner of 16th and L streets for 75 years. In 2018, the business changed its name as part of a legal settlement with Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., which sued over trademark infringement. The sports bar kept its menu and concept intact after the change, continuing to draw crowds with 60 beers on tap and weekend brunch.
The closure of Public House Downtown marks the second restaurant departure from the block between K and L streets this month. Station 16, located two doors down, closed June 21 after a decade in business. Station 16’s Elk Grove location remains open.
