An authentic Hawaiian shave ice chain is coming to Old Sacramento

A Maui shave ice chain is opening its first capital region location in Old Sacramento.

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is expanding with a store in Old Sacramento, the location’s owners confirmed. The shave ice shop declined to provide details on its exact location and opening plans, but its Instagram posts say the store will be opening “soon.”

“Our ohana is so excited to bring the best shave ice in the world from the island of Maui to the City of Trees,” one post reads. “Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is coming soon to Sacramento, and we simply can’t wait to share a true taste of aloha with you.”

Ululani’s launched in Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui in 2008, and has expanded to 15 locations across the islands and on the mainland in California, Florida and Texas. Its flagship Lahaina location was destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire, but community members have raised nearly $200,000 in the two years since as part of a GoFundMe fundraiser to support the business and its employees who lost homes in the devastating blaze.

The shave ice chain has been named the best on the island by Maui media in 12 of the last 13 years, according to its website.

Its menu includes one main item: Shave ice, a brightly colored flavored ice treat extremely popular across Hawaii. Customers can top their soft ice shavings with up to three out of more than 50 syrup flavors made in-house, ranging from classics like lemon, orange and blue raspberry to unique flavors like wedding cake, pickled mango and “Red Hot.” A condensed milk “snow cap” and other toppings are available for an extra fee.

If waiting for the Sacramento location to open sounds like an impossible challenge, Ululani’s has two Northern California locations, in Stockton and Livermore.
