Fast-casual customizable salad chain Sweetgreen will open its first Sacramento-area location in midtown on Dec. 2. The eatery, on the ground floor of The Richmond apartment building at 1629 S St., is the first of two planned locations in the capital region.

A second local spot, at The Boulevards shopping center in Campus Common, is set to open on Dec. 16. Plans to open the locations were announced in April.

For Sacramento diners, the arrival of Sweetgreen and its Hex bowls offers a new fresh and quick alternative in midtown, a neighborhood long characterized by its youthful dining crowd.

Sweetgreen offers salads, grain bowls and protein plates, with the opportunity to customize them to customers’ tastes. The site includes a “macro calculator” so customers can track nutritional content on their orders to meet their goals on protein, carbohydrates, fat and calories.

A chicken cauli plate from Sweetgreen will be one of the new offerings at the chain's new midtown outpost. The customizable salad and bowl restaurant is opening its first Sacramento-area store as part of a national expansion plan that includes two locations in the capital region in December.

Prices at the new location are not yet announced but are expected to fall in the $14-$18 range. Featured items include a chicken cauli plate, with roast chicken, garlic-parmesan cauliflower, caramelized onions, wild rice and creamy basil dressing.

Sweetgreen was founded in 2006 by three Georgetown University students. Headquartered in Los Angeles since 2016, it has been undergoing rapid growth across the U.S., with more than 250 locations nationwide and 15 in the Bay Area.

The Sacramento openings are part of that national expansion, with the company planning further California growth and footprint consolidation.
