A legacy Sacramento-area burger spot is closing its doors, but it’s not done yet

A famed hamburger business in Roseville is closing its final store — but it’s taking the show on the road.

Squeeze Burger announced Tuesday that its sole remaining brick-and-mortar in Roseville is set to close later this month, after its proposal for a new lease was reportedly denied.

“How and where we will operate our restaurant will change, please know that our business will continue operating to provide you all, the delicious food & service you and your family all have come to love and enjoy,” the restaurant’s social media statement reads.

Squeeze Burger plans to continue making their burgers, featuring their signature crispy cheese skirt, out of a food truck. According to the eatery’s statement, logistics for starting up operations in a food truck are still in the works, but they expect to get started in February.

“This plan not only includes finding locations around Roseville to where we can set up and operate our food truck on a consistent location at,” the statement said. “(It) also includes taking our food truck all around town and to directly serve our customers that live in other local communities as well.”

Still, the Squeeze Burger team said it won’t rule out a new brick-and-mortar if the opportunity arises.

“This isn’t a good bye, it’s a see you around town!” the restaurant’s announcement said.

Squeeze Burger’s storied history in the capital region

Formerly known as Squeeze Inn until 2017, the eatery has a long history in the area. Its reach spanned numerous locations in Northern California and even made it to the mayor of Flavortown himself, Guy Fieri.

The burger chain originally opened in 1982 near the corner of C Street and Elvas Avenue in East Sacramento, according to previous Bee reporting. Five years later, after the original restaurant’s lease lapsed, the then-Squeeze Inn moved to 7918 Fruitridge Road in Sacramento, where it resided for more than 20 years.

Squeeze Inn caught the attention of famed celebrity chef Guy Fieri in 2007, and it was featured in the inaugural season of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” for its famous cheese skirt.

In 2010, the Fruitridge location closed following an American with Disabilities Act-related lawsuit, and moved to a since-closed Power Inn Road unit. That same year, the Roseville outpost, at 106 North Sunrise Ave., opened its doors.

“Although we are deeply saddened (to close) after over 15+ years operating in this location ... we’re excited and looking forward to this new chapter,” the Squeeze Burger team wrote in its social media announcement.
