Pangaea to close in Curtis Park in March over dispute with landlord
Pangaea Bier Cafe, a popular Curtis Park craft beer spot at 2743 Franklin Blvd., is set to close on March 19 after negotiations with its landlord broke down.
Pangaea is owned and run by Rob Archie and his wife Kindra. The landlord is Archie’s father, Lee Archie, alongside his partner Hanju Morrow.
Rob Archie opened Pangaea in 2008. He later went on to partner with Peter Hoey to launch Urban Roots, which became a hospitality empire encompassing fried chicken concept BAWK!, adjacent speakeasy The Roost, Mexican restaurant Ceviceria and most recently the full-service Good Neighbor in Ice Blocks.
“We’ve always been a profitable business. We’ve paid our rent on time for 18 years, and it’s still current. We were offered unreasonable terms to stay at the location, and we’re looking for another spot at this point to move our business,” Archie said.
Archie hopes to find a new location close by.
“I love Curtis Park. I can’t even start to put into words the connections and experiences that we’ve had there. The main thing is our taking care of our team and getting them transitioned to the other properties, and making sure they’re taken care of,” he said.
The restaurant posted the news on social media. Within two hours the Instagram post garnered over 1,000 likes and dozens of comments.
User j.mill32 said, “Nooooooooo!!! You’ve been my go-to since I moved 13 years ago! Looks like I know where I’ll be eating for the next 37 days.”
Archie does not yet have a bead on the next location, but is actively looking.
“It’s been really humbling how many people have reached out and pitch places. When I see it, we’ll know it, and we’ll carry the spirit. I’m looking forward to being able to honor it with the new location,” Archie said.
The landlord, Lee Archie, was not available to comment.
News of Pangaea’s closure comes just days after another beloved local restaurant, East Sacramento’s OneSpeed Pizza, acknowledged their lease would not be renewed and is looking for a new location.
