University of Beer to close Folsom location. See restaurant set to replace it
The University of Beer location in Folsom is barreling toward its final days as the business announces it closure.
Serving burgers, tacos, burritos, Thai-inspired dishes, craft beer and other alcoholic drinks, the restaurant at 1009 East Bidwell St. closes Saturday, April 11, according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
Nate Yungvanitsait, the co-owner of University of Beer, told the Business Journal the closure is not a “sign of trouble,” but that it has become hard to manage the Folsom site alongside its other locations.
University of Beer has locations in East Sacramento, Davis, Roseville, Rocklin and Vacaville. The restaurant calls itself family friendly. It also allows and offers free meals to dogs of customers, according to its website.
Founded in Davis, University of Beer first opened in 2012. The Folsom location opened in August 2022, replacing an IHOP, the restaurant’s website said.
The restaurant’s remaining days will be Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11. The restaurant will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
What will replace University of Beer?
Roku Japanese Cuisine will be taking it place. The Roseville restaurant specializes in sushi, sashimi and ramen.
Roku Japanese Cuisine, originally from Roseville, is coming to University of Beer’s former spot inside the Willow Creek Town Center, the Business Journal reported. The restaurant opened in 2023.
The Japanese restaurant’s current location is at 4200 Thrive Drive in Roseville. It made Sacramento Yelp’s 2025 Top Places to Eat, according to Yelp Sacramento.
“At Roku, we honor Japan’s culinary traditions through meticulously crafted dishes,” the restaurant’s website said. “From pristine sashimi and artful sushi rolls to sizzling robata grills and comforting ramen bowls.”
There’s no available timeline for Roku Japanese taking over the space.
