Caked, which has been a home-based bakery business for 25 years, will hold its soft opening tomorrow for its new brick-and-mortar storefront in the Apple Farm Place retail center at 1430 Broadway in Placerville.

Owner Mandy Evans has been baking cakes since she was 15. She even baked her first wedding cake that year. She developed a passion for baking after taking a cake decorating class when she was 14.

She kept it as a hobby, ultimately starting the home business as a sideline to her day job.

“I worked full time at Blue Shield of California for 22 years, and last June, I got laid off. And so that was pretty devastating. So I was like, you know, I think it’s time to start and do something in this direction. So I decided to start looking at some storefronts, and came across this place,” she said.

“Ever since I made that decision, basically everything kind of just lined up and it was a sign for me to just do it.”

Friday is the official soft opening, but she’s been quietly opening for a few hours a day since Wednesday, to train her staff and prepare for the anticipated crowds.

“So I posted a soft opening, but everyone’s like, it’s not going to be very soft. So I decided to open yesterday and today, just for a few hours both days, just to kind of get my girls using the register and kind of get into the swing of things before it’s the mad chaos,” she said.

Cakes are Evans’s core product, but the bakery will offer other items as well, such as cookies ($2.50), cake pops ($5.00), cupcakes ($3.50) and cinnamon rolls ($5.50), as well as Gunther’s ice cream.

Ready-made display cakes will be available for $55, and ice cream cakes for $50. Evans does custom cakes for special events with about a week’s notice so she can order special decorations.

Initially the bakery will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., closed on Mondays. However, depending on interest, Evans may change the hours.
