Le Petit Chef, an immersive digital dinner, lands at Sacramento restaurant

Sacramento diners can experience dinner and an immersive digital show projected on their plates at the Hyatt Centric Downtown Sacramento starting on June 18.

Le Petit Chef is a traveling dining experience where guests sit and watch a 3D projection of a tiny chef preparing a multi-course meal at their table. But while the visuals are a projection, the food is real, and prepared by (presumably) regular-sized chefs at the 7th Street Standard, the Hyatt Centric’s restaurant.

What is Le Petit Chef?

Le Petit Chef was a project developed in 2015 by Belgian artists Filip Sterckx and Antoon Verbeeck at their artistic studio Skullmapping. Their video of a six-centimeter (2.4 inch) chef projected onto a table and cooking a virtual steak on the plate of each diner went viral. Restaurants, often hotel restaurants, around the world host ‘Le Petit Chef’ dinners in their dining rooms. According to the Skullmapping website, half a million people attend a Le Petit Chef experience every year.

What is on the Le Petit Chef menu, and how much does it cost?

For the Le Petit Chef experience in Sacramento, four menus are available. At the top end is the Le Grande Chef menu, which includes a burrata and tomato salad, bouillabaisse (a seafood stew) with scallops, truffled roast chicken with summer risotto, coffee-rubbed New York steak with buttered lobster, and lemon verbena crème brûlée. The Le Grande Chef menu is $189 dollars per person plus tax and tip.

The Classic menu comes in at a lower price point at $159 plus tax and tip. It includes the same main menu items but fewer premium ingredients, such as the lobster, truffles, and scallops.

The Le Petit Chef Vegetarian menu is $139 dollars plus tax and tip, and consists of a burrata and tomato salad, corn chowder, ratatouille lasagne, roasted hen of the woods mushroom with summer succotash, and lemon verbena crème brûlée.

The Junior Chef menu, for children 6 to 12, is $79 dollars plus tax and tip. It includes waffle fries, a fruit bowl, macaroni and cheese, grilled chicken, and a brownie with ice cream.

According to the Le Petit Chef website, requests for vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, or fish-free menus can be requested when making a reservation.

How can you make a reservation for Le Petit Chef in Sacramento?

Reservations are available online at the Hyatt Centric Downtown website, or by calling at 916-898-1100. Currently, the Le Petit Chef experience is dinner-only and takes place Thursday through Sunday, with multiple seatings on Fridays and Saturdays.
