Toasted Rooster Cafe, a women-owned restaurant, has opened in Orangevale.

Toasted Rooster Cafe, 8841 Greenback Lane, serves classic American breakfast and lunch. The business opened in early July, serving dishes such as chicken fried steak, breakfast burritos, and more creative courses like breakfast pizza and churro waffles.

Toasted Rooster Cafe is owned by Carrie Wolfe and her wife, Acia Wolfe. The inspiration to start a business came after Annie’s Breakfast & Steaks closed in 2020. The restaurant was beloved, and the closure was a community loss, Carrie Wolfe said.

“We went to Annie’s all the time,” Wolfe said. “When we found out (the owner) was shutting down, it was very sad for me because it’s a staple in Orangevale.”

In the absence of Annie’s, Wolfe came up with Toasted Rooster Cafe. But because the Wolfes couldn’t find a storefront in Orangevale, they went to Arden Arcade and bought a building. The first location opened in 2022.

This restaurant will be the second location for Toasted Rooster Cafe, with its first operating at 1650 Fulton Ave. in Arden Arcade. Four years later, the opportunity arose to open a location in Orangevale.

“(Annie’s) had been there like 40, 45 years; it has a long history in the community,” Wolfe said. “We weren’t doing this to make money. We were doing it to add to the community.”

When the first location opened, Wolfe said the restaurant focused on hiring 16-year-olds to get work experience and “people of all different walks of life.”

The opening in Orangevale has been a wild but exciting time, Wolfe said. It is larger than the original location, selling ice cream and soft serve, Wolfe said.

Toaster Rooster Cafe is open 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays, according to its website. The restaurant opens an hour later on Mondays, and stays open an hour later on the weekends.
