Sephora to pay $775K to Sacramento, other CA counties for improper disposal

Cosmetics retailer Sephora has agreed to pay $775,000 to Sacramento County and nearly two-dozen more California cities and counties for improperly handling hazardous waste at its retail operations, said Sacramento County District Attorney’s officials.

Sacramento County will receive $77,730 of the combined penalties and costs, the D.A.’s Office said Monday. Sephora will pay a total of $550,000 in civil penalties, $200,000 in cost recovery and $25,000 to the Environmental Enforcement and Training Account, which is managed by the California Environmental Protection Agency.

The judgment was filed in Sacramento Superior Court.

“These continued enforcement efforts ensure businesses follow the law when it comes to handling hazardous waste,” Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho said in the Monday statement. “Our office is committed to protecting both the public and the environment, and we will hold companies accountable to ensure they operate responsibly and within the law.”

The waste consisted of damaged, returned or expired items that could not be sold, District Attorney’s officials said in a statement announcing the settlement. In all, 24 district and city attorneys filed the civil enforcement action alleging Sephora improperly handled the items defined as hazardous waste.
