Rocklin gets region’s first Sports Basement discount athletics store

A sporting and outdoor goods store is coming to Rocklin, according to a social media announcement made by the city.

Sports Basement will be located at 6681 Stanford Ranch Road, replacing Floor & Decor in the Stanford Pointe Plaza, becoming its new anchor tenant. The business sells outdoor apparel, athletic gear, camping equipment and other sports accessories.

The announcement of the new retailer was made in late June during Rocklin’s State of the City. Then, mayor David Bass discussed “Choose Rocklin,” the city’s economic development project.

“It’s a great example of what Choose Rocklin is all about,” an online statement by the city said. “Creating an environment where businesses can thrive, partnerships matter, and investment in our community continues to grow.”

At the State of the City, Bass spoke with Dave Rumberg, the Partner of Sports Basement to announce the arrival of the business.

“During the conversation, (Bass) shared that one of the reasons Sports Basement chose Rocklin was the outstanding experience they had working with City staff,” the city wrote. “From the initial conversations through the development process, he highlighted the City’s responsiveness, partnership, and commitment to helping businesses succeed.”

It’ll be the first Sports Basement in the Sacramento area, with a majority of locations for the chain in the Bay Area and Southern California, according to its website. Sports Basement first opened in Mission Bay in San Francisco in 1998.

The California-founded business prides itself on discounted prices for sports equipment, its website reads. Sports Basement was founded by Eric Prosnitz, Tom Phillips and David Ciulla, who came up with the business idea during a hike at Mt. Rainier, Washington.

The city of Rocklin wrote online that Sports Business will open in the fall.
