Map shows the median home value in every state. California’s ranking might surprise you

California’s real estate market is a national punchline.

As it turns out, we don’t have the most expensive home values in America.

That honor falls on Hawaii, where the median home value is just north of $1 million, according to new data analyzed by Zillow. California, of course, ranks second with a median home value of about $825,000. After that, no states are even close.

Other western states, including Washington and Colorado, also have high home prices.

It appears some of the best deals can be found in southern states such as Mississippi and Arkansas. In Texas, which has promoted itself for years as a destination for California refugees, has a median home value of around $256,000.
