Lake Tahoe ranch hits market at $188 million. Take a look at one of the priciest US listings
The iconic 130-acre Shakespeare Ranch along the eastern shoreline of Lake Tahoe hit the market this week for $188 million, putting it near the top of the list of most expensive properties in the United States.
The Nevada-side ranch, which dates back to the late 1800s, comprises 17 residences, cabins and fantastic amenities, including 425 feet of lake frontage, a coveted 465-foot private pier with two boat lifts, 14 private buoys and a rare boat house in Tahoe City, California.
The offering gives investors an opportunity to purchase the entire ranch or a variety of several lakefront residences and home sites with prices starting at $9.95 million, according to Chase International.
“In a world where opportunities like this are few and far between, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own one of the most coveted properties in America within Lake Tahoe’s only gated golf and beach community of Glenbrook, Nevada,” co-listing agent Mike Dunn of Chase International said in a statement.
The ranch is named after the north-facing Shakespeare Rock, a bluff just south of Glenbrook and above Highway 50. The name comes from a likeness of the famous playwright naturally etched in lichen.
Among the available properties within Shakespeare Ranch are a newly built Marc Appleton-designed, 9,000-square-foot residence with a waterside cabana, which is under construction, a 4,980-square-foot lakefront home and waterside cabana, two more lakefront properties with existing structures and room to build estates, and a meadow parcel with conceptual plans from architect Backen & Backen, according to Chase International.
Amenities pile up
For $188 million, the amenities pile up. There are horse stables with paddocks, animal enclosures and rodeo grounds with pens and bleachers.
Built in 1873, an entertainment barn and surrounding ranch land within the property are the venue for the Glenbrook Rodeo, a competition that has also featured past performances by Lionel Richie, Kenny Loggins, Robin Williams and Jay Leno.
The listing also includes a grand pool house with an indoor pool and steam spa, fireside dining, an outdoor hot tub, a fully equipped gym, an art loft, an executive office suite and a staging kitchen for catering.
Not to be forgotten are the compound’s expansive views of the lake and the Sierra Nevada.
“Currently, no other land holding on the shores of Lake Tahoe can be created in the image of the historic Shakespeare Ranch,” co-listing agent Claudia Thompson of Chase International said.
Shari Chase and Susan Lowe of Chase International are also co-listing agents for the property.
Shakespeare Ranch is among the priciest residential offerings in the nation, but even at $188 million it can’t top a $295 million compound in Naples, Florida, that is believed to be the most expensive home in the United States. Still, Shakespeare Ranch tops the real estate market in Nevada.
The longtime owners started putting together and improving the property in the 1980s, Dunn told the Wall Street Journal.
