Inside serene Elk Grove home with own pristine golf links, lake, $1M kitchen remake

Inside Look is a Sacramento Bee series where we take readers behind the scenes at restaurants, new businesses, local landmarks and news stories.

Businessman Gil Moore’s property 20 miles southeast of Sacramento sits back from a rural road that intersects with the landmark Sheldon Inn Restaurant and Bar.

But the 27-acre estate in Elk Grove feels worlds apart, like a far-flung luxury vacation retreat.

“Can you see how private this place can be, and how relaxing, especially for someone who’s working a lot and just wants to get away?” listing agent Ernesto Sayson said during a recent tour of the property with The Sacramento Bee.

For Moore, that’s exactly what he was looking for in a home.

“The benefits of our sports estate, and the natural beauty — watching pure white pelicans every year, or the beavers flopping around, or simply paddle boarding around our 65-acre lake, once again — gives us all balance of life,” he said in a text. “After all, life is about family and living together with love and respect. That is what our home is all about. Family, love, respect, and a balanced life.”

The mansion, part of the small community of Wilton, is a fusion of elegance, tranquility and entertainment opportunities. The compound is one of just a handful of properties sitting on the exclusive 65-acre lake. The property includes seven acres of ownership of the lake, according to the property listing.

The unparalleled home, on the market for $6.65 million, is the most expensive residential listing in Elk Grove, according to Zillow.

The main house sits at the end of a double-gated driveway that runs alongside Moore’s private, immaculate, six-hole golf course. The residence doesn’t merely back up to a golf club like many other luxury estates — it comes with its own course. Separately, there’s a metal gangway that leads out to a small island on the lake with a putting green and a couple of small sand traps.

The lush grounds offer a lot more for outdoor and recreational enthusiasts than just golf. There’s an expansive lawn, a newly surfaced, lighted tennis, pickleball and basketball court and an infinity pool that overlooks the water. No motorboats are allowed on the lake. Swimming in the lake is enhanced by the added convenience of a floating dock.

“The beauty was the enormous over-the-edge pool, playing tennis, golf, pickleball, or basketball to de-stress after a hard day’s work, and to enjoy nature’s beauty with a glass of wine — watching the sunset, listening to Enya,” Moore said. “We raised five kids learning to balance life with sports, school and work at our beautiful home.”

Entertainer’s dream

The main house spans 8,900 square feet with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. There is a detached, one-bedroom guest house, or casita, with lake views next to a separate gym facility that features wet and dry saunas and a bathroom. The gym could be converted into a small third home on the property.

Outdoor amenities include a covered patio, several sitting areas and a grilling kitchen.

The interior is an entertainer’s dream. Moore, who is well-connected to the community, has hosted many fundraisers at the house.

There’s a game and media room upstairs with large terrace. A substantial wine room large enough to sit a tasting party around a table, holds 1,800 bottles.

Moore, president and founder of Gil Moore Oil Co., bought the property in 1998 for $1.3 million, according to public property records, and soon took on a major renovation.

“In 2005, we gutted the entire inside and outside under the guidance of (the) renowned Suzy Stuart, an acclaimed interior decorator in San Francisco and Northern California,” Moore said. “My company, New West Petroleum, was doing extremely well, and it was the second largest privately owned company (in the region) ... at that time. I spent over $8 million creating and designing this home for privacy, safety, and all sports possible for our family.”

The cost for the interior remodel totaled $2.5 million, which included more than $1 million to renovate the kitchen, according to Sayson. A new, energy-efficient roof was recently installed for $250,000.

An attention to fine detail runs throughout the home’s spacious interior and captures the owner’s commitment to quality work, Sayson boasted.

Buyers will find the estate turnkey, he said, emphasizing that the house is meticulously maintained, with the owner always willing to invest in repairs and upgrades to keep the property in top condition.

“He spares no expense,” the broker said. “He tries to do things well, he doesn’t skimp.”

‘Movie-inspired closet’

The primary bedroom is highlighted by high-end amenities, such as heated floors and a lavish walk-in closet inspired by the Nicholas Gage movie “The Family Man,” according to Sayson.

The property has recently gained attention from a pool of high-wealth individuals, including members of the Sacramento Kings NBA franchise, a former player with the Oakland Raiders, an attorney, a hedge-fund manager and a Bay Area casino owner, Sayson said.

“This property checks all the boxes of what buyers are looking for, privacy on 27 acres, tennis, pickleball, an infinity-edge pool, lake location, massive main house and an accessory dwelling,” ” Sacramento appraiser and housing market analyst Ryan Lundquist said in an email. “The description of ‘CEO house’ from the listing agent makes perfect sense in this case when considering the amenities and price point.”

The estate is a unique find in the area, he added.

“It’s not easy getting a lot around 20 acres in Elk Grove, as there have only been eight sales with that much acreage or more over the past five years on MLS,” Lundquist said.

The property operates on a Control4 home electronics system.

Up to 10 cars can be housed in the garages, and there’s a separate structure in which to park an RV.
