Don’t overlook the door hinges.

Detail matters in a sprawling residence in the Sacramento foothills, from its bespoke tile work to rich cherry-wood flooring, from unique layout to the use of old Chicago brick in a solarium-like room.

And yes, even the decorative metalwork on the door hinges were taken into consideration.

The homeowner painstakingly designed every room in the three-story, 7,365-square-foot El Dorado Hills residence — now on the market for $3.9 million — to dazzle and surprise.

“She’s not an architect, but she did design this house, and she told them what she wanted, and the plans were drawn up,” listing agent Pat Seide of Coldwell Banker said.

El Dorado Hills is located 30 miles northeast of Sacramento.

Traditional Tudor-style home

Built in 2010, the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom, traditional Tudor-style house sits on a half-acre surrounded by lush greenery. Nearly every room, as well as multiple patios and verandas, offer panoramic views of the sixth fairway of Serrano Country Club’s golf course.

“This custom masterpiece blends timeless elegance with modern comfort, designed for both grand entertaining and everyday living,” the official property listing states.

The journey into the timeless elegance begins at the curb. The home’s facade is covered in ivy. A stone driveway and path leads to a covered courtyard that is unlike any other. Built in brick and stone, the outdoor courtyard is more like an elegant living room where you can watch the neighbors walk by while sitting in front of a fireplace.

Walk through the front door and the layout flows uninterrupted into multiple living areas highlighted by warm cherry wood accents, fine architectural details and an abundance of natural light. The dome ceiling capping the stairway to the lower level is immediately striking.

“At night, it lights up,” Seide said about the dome. “It’s so gorgeous. I went to the Fairmont Hotel in Wailea (in Hawaii), and they did things like that. They made these domes light up, and it was just spectacular.”

Solarium with a fireplace

One of the living areas, a “solarium” with wood crossbeams and checkerboard flooring of stone and wood, exposes old Chicago brick to impart a sense of history and texture. Plenty of windows and glass doors illuminate the space, which can be closed by retractable doors. One of the home’s seven fireplaces is found here.

The living room centers around a white marble fireplace that shows the homeowner’s creativity: a basket-weave pattern in the marble adorning the mantle.

“The fireplace is amazing,” Seide said. “She told the guy this is what she wanted, and he says, ‘I don’t know.’ She says, ‘You can do it.’ That’s how she is. She’ll go around and say, ‘You can do it,’ and she puts that positive energy into somebody who feels like I am going to be able to do this. She’s really good at that.”

Two elements in the kitchen draw immediate attention.

Whimsical kitchen island

One is a whimsical island that was inspired by a MacKenzie-Childs art piece the seller owns. MacKenzie-Childs is a New York-based luxury homeware company renowned for its fanciful and distinctive hand-painted ceramics, home décor and furniture.

The other kitchen element that pops out is a black high-end AGA range. Many AGA ranges are priced above $10,000. A tile mosaic adorns the backguard.

A hearth room and a wine cellar sit adjacent to the kitchen.

Custom tile work throughout the home is also wonderfully displayed in the luxurious primary suite, a private sanctuary spotlighted by spa-inspired amenities, such as a jet tub, and two fireplaces. The bathroom is symmetrically designed for two people to easily share. A central shower opens on opposite ends, the custom walk-through closet is U-shaped and matching bathroom vanities stand on each side.

The home’s versatility allows for hosting guests or for multi-generational living. Separate guest suites — all with views — provide private space for family or visitors. Upstairs on the third level, an artistic window frames a view of the living space below. Downstairs, there’s a wet bar and sliding glass doors that access the backyard, where you could walk straight onto the golf course.

The study’s cherry wood paneling, fireplace, barrel vault ceiling and built-in bookshelves provide for a serene retreat.

Like the custom windows and the door hardware and hinges, the iron newel post caps on the stairway showcase fine detail not to missed, either.

“This remarkable estate embodies the ultimate in luxury and lifestyle,” the property description concludes.
