74-year-old woman missing after storm washes away California home. ‘Still have hope’
A 74-year-old woman whose mobile home was swept away by a tropical storm in Southern California remains missing, but her family is holding out hope.
“My mom’s really tough,” daughter Tracey Monteverde told KTLA. “She’s been through a lot in her life and if there’s one person that’s sitting out there, that would be her.”
Christie Rockwood of Angelus Oaks has been missing since the remnants of Hurricane Hilary struck Southern California, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Rockwood, described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing 265 pounds, was last seen Sunday, Aug. 20, sheriff’s officials said.
Her home in the Seven Oaks Resort area was swept off its foundation by rising river waters, officials said.
Her family said Rockwood told them she intended to ride out the storm in her mobile home.
“She thought it was going to be just a heavy storm,” son Ethan Harrison told KNBC.
Searchers reported finding wreckage from her home and some of her belongings about 3 miles away, Monteverde told KTLA.
“I haven’t given up hope yet but the only thing that hurts me is thinking she’s stuck in the mud trapped, cold and suffering,” Harrison told KNBC.
Authorities ask that anyone with information about Rockwood call the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station at 909-918-2305.
Angelus Oaks is about 20 miles east of San Bernardino.
