A 27-year-old California man has been arrested in connection with an “unprovoked attack” that left a woman with severe injuries, including facial trauma and signs of strangulation, police said.

Oscar Benn of Altadena faces an attempted murder charge, the Santa Monica Police Department wrote in a Nov. 25 Facebook post. He’s accused of “repeatedly kicking and punching” a 25-year-old woman as she lay on the ground.

The attack happened at about 12:30 a.m. Sept. 22, and it was captured on surveillance video, police said. In the video, a man can be seen running away.

Police publicly released the footage in hopes of finding the attacker and said a tip helped investigators identify Benn. The 27-year-old was found near a Veterans Affairs facility in West Los Angeles on Nov. 14 and arrested, police said.

Benn’s attorney couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The woman who was attacked since recovered, Det. Sean Baker wrote in an email to McClatchy News. She was “new to the area and experiencing homelessness,” police said.

Santa Monica is a roughly 15-mile drive west of Los Angeles.
