Powerball player misses $163 million jackpot in California — but still wins prize
A Powerball player in California missed out on the $163 million jackpot but still won $29,466, lottery officials said.
The ticket in the Dec. 30 drawing matched four winning Powerball numbers plus the Powerball, according to the California Lottery.
Lottery prizes in California are adjusted based on number of tickets sold and number of winners.
The winning numbers were 9, 19, 33, 38 and 39 with a Powerball of 1, the lottery said.
There was no grand prize winner, and the jackpot will be an estimated $178 million, with a cash value of $80.7 million, in the drawing Jan. 1, according to the national Powerball site.
What to know about Powerball
To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338. Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state. Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
